"Oh no, no, please God help me!"
I've watched this about 37 times today, i'll never get bored of sabbath, I'm transfixed by Tony Iommi's wooden finger tips, did he go back in time and have his fingers operated on by a medieval druid?
I wish I'd invented metal 40 years ag0! if I had I'd be pretty pleased with myself...
Update: "In an industrial accident at the age of 17 on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, Tony Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of his right hand... After attempting to learn to play right-handed, Iommi strung his guitars with extra-light strings (using banjo strings, which were a lighter gauge than even the lightest guitar-strings of the time) and wore plastic covers over the two damaged fingers. He fashioned the latter himself, by melting plastic liquid-soap bottles into a ball and then using a soldering iron to make holes into this ball, putting his fingers in while the plastic was still soft enough to be shaped. He then trimmed and sanded away the excess plastic to leave himself with two thimbles, which he then covered with leather, to provide better grip on the strings"
Not quite so medieval but definitely brutal!

Now that there's an economic downturn it'll probably be less easy for the next batch of school leavers to get a job in an office playing on the internet all day, so if you get a trade, i.e. metalwork or carpentry, mind your bloody fingers or you sideline as a concert Cellist could go down the pan. x
Capuchin Crypt
I took a visit to the Capuchin Crypt in Rome last year - check out this guy
"Crypt of the Three Skeletons: The center skeleton is enclosed in an oval, the symbol of life coming to birth. In its right hand it holds a scythe, symbol of death which cuts down everyone, like grass in a field, while its left hand holds the scales, symbolizing the good and evil deeds weighed by God when he judges the human soul. A placard in five languages declares "What you are now we used to be, what we are now you will be." From Capuchin Crypt on WIKIPEDIA
I wonder who had the job of boiling the bones clean to make these arrangements...gotta love those catholics

Mother Damnable
Mother Damnable, the remarkable Shrew of Kentish Town, the person who gave rife to the sign Mother Red Cap on the Hamstead Road near London. Legend has it that she was a woman called Jinny who died in mysterious circumstances.
Jinney was born to a peddler brick maker and traveled with her mother throughout her childhood. She bore her first child at the age of sixteen to Gipsy George, shortly after their marriage Gipsy was tried for sheep theft and hung, many an unfortunate ended his days swinging from the gibbet near what is today Camden Town underground station. Jinny's next suitor was known as Darby, a Jekyll and Hyde drunk who mysteriously disappeared. Around this time Jinny's parents were tried for dark arts and also hung. A year later Jinny associated herself with a man called Pitcher who was found crouched up the oven burnt to a cinder, she was tried for his murder but acquitted as it was known that Pitcher had often hidden in the oven to avoid Jinny's sharp tongue.
Jinny soon became a recluse eventually taking a lodger who was haggard in his countenance and full of trouble. He did however pay his way but soon passed away unexplainably, the town rumour mill reported that harsh words and bumps and bangs were often heard from the house. As Jinny grew older she was baited by local yobs whenever anything unfortunate happened and known as mother Red Cap for the hat she always wore.
She was found dead in front of the fire clutching her crook and a teapot full of herbs, drugs and a liquid. The potion had been given to her cat who after two hours lost all its hair and died. Her body was so stiff that her limbs had to be broken to go into her coffin.
Jinny's ghost is said to haunt the Mother Red Cap, a halfway tavern known today as The Worlds End and Underworld club. There have been numerous sightings and reports of the unusual.

Yule Horror
by H. P. Lovecraft
There is snow on the ground,
And the valleys are cold,
And a midnight profound
Blackly squats o'er the wold;
But a light on the hilltops half-seen hints of feastings un- hallowed and old.
There is death in the clouds,
There is fear in the night,
For the dead in their shrouds
Hail the sin's turning flight.
And chant wild in the woods as they dance round a Yule- altar fungous and white.
To no gale of Earth's kind
Sways the forest of oak,
Where the sick boughs entwined
By mad mistletoes choke,
For these pow'rs are the pow'rs of the dark, from the graves of the lost Druid-folk.
